Does My Outdoor Grill have enough Propane?

orlando grillYou’re in the middle of grilling for your friends and family on a balmy summer night when you notice that your steaks are no longer cooking-you’ve run out of propane. What do you do? Well, obviously you either go buy some more propane for your Orlando grill or buy takeout and vow to never let this happen again. How can you avoid this issue from happening, you may be asking? Check your propane tank before you start grilling! If your propane tank doesn’t come with a gauge, there’s no need to worry, there are other ways to estimate how much propane you have left for your Orlando grill.

Below you’ll find useful tips to make sure your propane tank is always full or at least full enough to finish the job.

How To Check The Propane For Your Orlando Grill

Before you go out and buy a propane gauge, which we do suggest. Try these tricks to get an idea of how much propane is left in the tank:

  • Check By Weight – Unless you’ve been handling propane tanks for a while, you may not be able to guess how much propane is in the tank just by picking it up. To check your Orlando Grill’s propane tank by weight you’ll need to weigh the tank first and then subtract the tare weight(the weight of the tank when it’s empty, usually indicated by a TW stamped on the tank) from the total weight. If your propane tank can hold up to 20 lbs of propane and the number you get after subtraction is 10 lbs then you know that you have about half a tank of propane left.
  • Check By Cook Time – This technique requires a little more math, but is definitely worth knowing. Make sure to have a pen and paper ready to write all this down and keep it in a place where you can easily refer back to it. What you need to understand first is that one gallon of propane produces approximately 92,000 BTUs. Next, you will divide that number by the BTUH rating of your Orlando grill. The number you are left with is the number of hours it will take for you to employ one gallon of propane on your grill’s maximum heat setting. After you have this number, you will then need to multiply it by the number of gallons the tank holds. This should give you a good idea of how many hours of cook time you have left when you pair it with the weight method.
  • Check With Water This is one of the quickest ways to estimate how much propane is left in your Orlando grill. All you need to do is fill a container with hot water, pour the water down the sides of the tank and run your hands down the tank until you find a cool spot. The top of the cool spot is where the fill line or level is located.
